Double Diapering
(An excerpt
from the upcoming book Yes, Your Baby Can Fly:
The Best Tips For Flying With An Infant.)
What Is
It? Double diapering is the technique of
using two diapers (rather than one) to protect a baby,
by simply adding a second diaper over the first.
While users of cloth diapers might rely on this
technique to increase absorbency, double-diapering
with disposable diapers eliminates the fear of a
diaper leaking through to baby's clothing and allows
for on-the-go changes. While some caregivers
prefer to use a larger diaper as the top layer,
two diapers of equal size should suffice for most
situations.
Great For
On-The-Go Changes.
When traveling, if you have double-diapered your
baby, on-the-go changes are noticeably easier.
For a quick change, simply open both diapers (being
mindful to leave the top diaper in place under baby),
slide out the soiled diaper (the diaper closest to
baby's skin), wipe baby clean (adding salve if needed)
and refasten the top layer. The top unsoiled
layer has now become the new, fresh diaper.
When To Double-Diaper
With air
travel, double-diapering is a lifesaver when
passengers are not permitted to leave their seats or
if the lavatories are not available. Many
caregivers are also grateful for double-diapering when
the absence of a baby changing table necessitates
changing baby in a lap, chair or stroller. Even
in the best travel conditions, double-diapering can
make changing baby a breeze by simply eliminating the
task of rummaging for a clean diaper.
